WHY IT MATTERS

Why Insurance Appraisals Matter

Accurate Coverage

Without a current appraisal, your policy may underinsure or overinsure your jewelry, costing you at claim time.

Faster Claims

A detailed, itemized report speeds up claims processing if a piece is lost, stolen or damaged.

Keeps Pace With Value

Gold, diamond and gemstone prices move. We recommend updating appraisals every 2 to 3 years to reflect current replacement cost.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Insurance Appraisal FAQ

What is a replacement-value appraisal, and how is it different from fair market value?

Replacement value is the cost to replace an item with a comparable new piece at current retail prices, the figure insurers use for coverage. Fair market value is what a willing buyer would pay a willing seller, used for divorce, probate and bankruptcy matters. The two numbers can differ significantly, and replacement value is almost always higher.

How often should I update my jewelry insurance appraisal?

We recommend updating appraisals every 2 to 3 years, or sooner if gold and diamond prices move significantly. Most insurers also require a recent appraisal, typically within the last 3 to 5 years, to keep a scheduled item's coverage valid.

Will my insurance company accept your appraisal report?

Yes. Our reports are USPAP compliant and prepared by a G.I.A. Graduate Gemologist, the standard insurers look for. We regularly work with major carriers and can format documentation to match your insurer's specific requirements.

Do I need an appraisal for every piece, or just my most valuable items?

Most homeowners and renters policies have a per-item limit for jewelry, often $1,000 to $2,500, without a separate schedule. Any piece worth more than that limit should be individually appraised and scheduled to be fully covered.

How long does an insurance appraisal take?

Most appraisals are completed during a single visit, with the written report typically delivered within a few business days. Larger collections may take slightly longer.
